Bay Area Bike Rides

BART-accessible routes for fun mixed-group rides.

Road outages

Winter rains often damage these remote roads. That makes for nice riding, but sometimes the road will be shut down by work crews. Be respectful if so.

August 2025: Tunnel Road in Oakland, used on a number of these routes, is undergoing construction to fix the slid-out sections, and a section is closed to bikes from 7AM-5PM, Mon-Fri. (City of Oakland project page). There’s a detour posted via Buckingham Place, which is quite steep and not the way most people would prefer to ride. I’d recommend Claremont to the north, or the Montclair Railroad Trail/Shepherd Canyon route to the south.

It’s supposed to be open on weekends.

September 2025: The slide on the bottom of Wildcat Canyon Road near Orinda is undergoing active construction. The project is quite extensive and the road is impassable when construction crews are active. On weekends you might be able to hike through the construction site.

El Tonoyal provides an alternate (though hillier) route.
